What is a 'modern' website??
I'll try to explain...
'Classic' websites are/were VERY manual to create and maintain. You'd pretty much create a new typed out page for every page you wanted on your website. Sure there were some tools to help you create them but they weren't very intuitive (mainly due to the vast amounts of things you can do with a website), costly to buy (and were ever evolving, requiring you to buy upgrades often) and it was information overload for most of us (myself included).
Content was 'static'...it stayed the same on those manual pages and if you wanted to change something, you had to change all your pages....let's say you had a product mentioned on 30 pages....you had to edit all 30 pages. Time consuming. Tedious. Error prone.
Want to keep lists of items? Another manual process...especially when info changed.
No wonder websites often got boring and then abandoned (by owners as well as visitors).
Modern sites = dynamic sites. Ever changing, easy to updated. Fast to load.
The buzzword these days is "Social Networking" - Facebook, MySpace,...
These modern sites are driven by a database of info that is stored in tables just waiting to be called upon. Once a visitor triggers something on your site, the database is accessed and a fresh custom page is created just for that visitor.
And this is faster than the 'classic' method listed above where it would have to load the entire (boring) page that the publisher decided was important to the viewer...what if they were wrong...? You'll lose a visitor in an instant.
For the most part, that data lies dormant. What's the point of that??? Well, if no visitor wants to see the info, that info isn't shown. Why waste your time creating pages that may not be needed?
These modern sites manage the content behind the scenes so you can focus on a great design and tools to engage your visitors. Let them choose what info they want to see and they'll have a great time enjoying your online community.
